Product Information
In feudal Japan one of the most highly coveted titles among a lord’s high-ranking retainers was “Hatamoto”. The fortunate Samurai on who this distinctive honor was bestowed was allowed immediate access to his lord, day and night, and was deemed trustworthy enough to wear his sword in his lord’s presence.
Like its namesake, the Hatamoto™ was designed to be a knife worthy of great respect and trust. A knife you will treasure for years and one you can bet your life on in a pinch. The blade has been precision hollow ground out of our famous San Mai III® stainless, 25% stronger than any other stainless steel in the world. For piercing power it features a modified
Tanto
Tanto
Tanto Blade: The classic Japanese tanto shape has the point exactly inline with the spine of the blade, and has a graceful belly curve. Most tantos seen on the American cutlery market are the Americanized tanto format. Like the Japanese tanto, the Americanized tanto has a high-point in-line with the spine. A flat grind is applied to the point, leaving it very thick and massively strong. The front edge meets the bottom edge at an obtuse angle, rather than curving to meet it as in the Japanese tanto. There is a separate grind applied to the bottom edge, often a hollow grind to leave this edge extremely sharp. Other tanto formats have become popular also, and modifications such as clipping the point or applying a chisel-grind are often seen.
point (first popularized by Lynn Thompson in the early 1980’s). It pierces like a dagger yet remains remarkably resistant to bending or breaking. For cutting power, the edge is subtlety curved and ground thin and honed to razor keenness so it will “bite” with even moderate pressure and deliver dramatically deep, gaping cuts with full power blows.
To have this remarkable blade come alive in your hand we have crafted a simple yet highly efficient handle that will accommodate a wide variety of grip styles. For strength, rigidity and security, we have resolutely insisted on thick
