Solid locking action, extreme grip, comfortable, SHARP. Just an overall really solid knife. I've had it for a year and it seems sharper now! If you're alright with carrying a sheath, great knife.

The soft, slightly tacky handle provides a very comfortable, very stable grip. The blade is sturdy, and stays very sharp. A little practice opening it single-handed and you're good to go. The safety feature of the halfway open/close position lets you keep your fingers...a big bonus!

Good sharp, durable, quality knife. Poor one-hand opening fe

Would give this one 3.5 to 4 stars, but no other option permitted. See below. I purchased my Gator 1 Half Serrated knife several years ago, unknowingly that they had altered the design to include a thumb stud for one-hand opening. I was initailly displeased that they had sent me a different version of the knife that I paid for. The blade included an ambidextrous thumb-stud, and the words "Stud Gator" on the blade. I later immediately saw the benefit of the TRULY amazingly EASY one-hand opening device. Ironically, if you search for the "Stud Gator," it is now very hard to find.
Concerning the Gator 2, I LOVE the drop point blade, it's not as "dangerous" to use as is the clip point blade. It is VERY durable, great for rugged outdoor/camping use and came reasonably sharp right out of the box. The handle design is also top-notch. No slipping whatsoever even when wet or muddy. The added second finger choil may come as a hindrance to users of the Gator 1, but this is an acquired taste and you can easily get used to it and find it beneficial-- your fingers are not as cramped up when compared to the original 'curved' handle of the Gator 1. If we are comparing this knife to the original folding Gators with no opening device whatsoever(no stud, no hole, just blade and fingers to open)... this would be a much improved version of the original. Since this is however a different knife, billed as an improvement with a one-hand opening feature, I will talk about this absolutely USELESS design of the one-hand opening hole. Even in the best of times, it is possible to only open the knife nearly halfway using the hole, then you must reposition your hand and wrist to go further. In short, it is not easily possible to open the knife using the hole in one fluid motion. I have even practiced with it a while, and opened and closed it several times to loosen the blade-- but the hole (more like slit) is simply very awkward to use. It becomes actually irritating on the tip of your thumb because the size of the hole is counterproductive to the leverage required to actually open the knife comfortably in one fluid motion. I can understand that it is probably significantly cheaper for Gerber to use a cutout rather than adding material to make a thumb stud-- but in my opinion, this was not adequately tested prior to production. If you compare the newer G2 version with the G1 with thumb stud, they would have gone back to the drawing board. Fantastic knife for the great blade and handle, but if you are buying simply for the ease of one hand opening, search elsewhere. Great knife all around, but very poor selling-point feature.
